Hacking Guitar Hero

I’ve had a renewed commitment to keeping my blog up to date. We’ll see how long it lasts…

I spent all last night attempting to hack Guitar Hero II to accept custom songs. There is a fairly large, growing community of people who create their own GH tracks, replace the existing tracks on the game, then shred to their heart’s delight. After much trial & error and pure frustration, I was able to get it working. I’ve only loaded 3 tracks so far:

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love
Foo Fighters - Times Like These

The quality of the hacks are based purely on the effort put in by the people who make them. Most songs only have 1 working difficulty level, which is usually Expert, and no coop mode. Occasionally, there are some stud-nerds that pull out all the stops and do all difficulty levels and coop mode, such as the Maiden tune. Creating the songs seems rather time consuming and I’m too much of a lazy ass to work on it. I’m perfectly content on being lazy and relying on the hard work of the nerd community, all the while lambasting and criticizing their laziness for not making more songs and not incorporating more difficulty levels and coop mode.

Here is an example of the hack…

Journey - Any Way You Want It

*UPDATE*
Faith No More - Epic
Journey - Any Way You Want It

Surprisingly, Epic is just a blast to play as it is to air guitar and sing to. Even though the guitar parts are short, they are pretty damn rocking. I really hope these rumors about 80s and Metal editions of Guitar Hero are true. Most likely, there will be a MTV-sponsored Fallout Boy only edition for $80. >:O
